Too many dropped balls and costly penalties added up to an opening-season loss for Winston-Salem State on Sunday night.

Tuskegee held the ball for more than 20 minutes in the second half on its way to a 20-17 win in the Red Tails Classic at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama in front of around 12,000 fans.

The Golden Tigers went ahead 20-17 on a Lorcan Ryans 29-yard field goal after the Rams’ defense halted the drive. The defense spent a lot of time on the field in the second half but still did enough to hold them to a field goal with 5:15 to play.

Despite getting the ball back after the field goal the Rams’ offense went three and out and were forced to punt. The Golden Tigers then ran out the clock to hold on for the win.
