Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping put on a very cosy display with India’s Narendra Modi in recent days.

Their blossoming friendship will be a blow to Donald Trump , because India’s premier once said the president was a “true friend”.

But that all changed when the US imposed two rounds of tariffs on India earlier this month.

The initial 25% tariff on Indian exports were part of Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’, while the latter round was meant to punish Modi for still buying Russia’s cheap oil exports despite the war in Ukraine.

Trump has reportedly tried to speak to Modi on multiple occasions since then to seek a compromise, but the Indian leader has ignored the calls.
