Teenage Roy Conway was heading to school, books tucked under his arm, his legs madly pumping the pedals on his old single-speed bike.
The British teenager blasted up a steep hill, shooting past a group of other cyclists, serious members of a racing club. By the time they breathlessly got to the top and met Roy, they knew this kid was something special.
The team members encouraged Roy to join the club and so began a lifetime of competitive racing with a passion so deeply entrenched he would go on to win countless championships and train hundreds of cyclists, particularly youth.
“He won so many races in his career,” said David Conway, one of Roy’s two sons. “My dad (also) had a huge influence on the neighbourhood kids, getting them competitive.”
