Loveland resident David Frech took this photo in his backyard in southwest Loveland on a perch surrounding insect-free tomato plants. He wrote: "Say's Phoebe is a western flycatcher, about the size of a robin, that lives in dry country. They nest under the eaves of a porch or barn. They watch for insects in flight or in the grass by hovering over the ground or from a low perch such as our backyard fence. Sometimes they catch their prey in flight or pounce on them in the grass. They seem undaunted by humans and perch near me to showcase insect trophies. The one pictured here is showing off a small grasshopper, but I've seen them with small mosquitoes and large dragon flies. They work from dawn to dusk. Much better than any chemical yard spray.".. .. (Submitted / David Frech)
