The health centre in Fort Providence has been shut down as the community evacuates due to an inferno on its doorstep.

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) made the announcement on Monday morning, indicating that the closure will remain in effect until further notice.

"A mobile paramedic service is stationed in the community to address basic health needs in the community and for first responders until services can be re-established at the health centre," NTHSSA stated. "This team will remain on site as long as conditions permit but may be withdrawn at any moment if safety becomes a concern. Emergency services personnel in community will be able to reach the paramedic by radio in the event of any communication outages."
