WASHINGTON — Around a thousand people spent their Labor Day running and walking through the streets of D.C., in protest of the federal surge in the District. Demonstrators said they wanted to put their day off from work to good use.

"I set my alarm extra early on this holiday weekend. Just so I get out here and make my voice heard,” said D.C. resident Christie Harlan.

Harlan is one of the hundreds that joined the DC freedom run , an event for those opposed to the federal surge.

"I feel bad for the National Guard members that have been deployed here, to essentially be window dressing for this administration,” she said.

Demonstrators said it can be hard to protest on work days, so they didn't want to miss this opportunity.
