BUFFALO, N.Y. — The school year begins in Western New York this week, and that means that school buses are returning to local roads.

Be sure to remember some important traffic rules surrounding school buses:

Yellow flashing lights on school buses mean that the bus is preparing to stop. Drivers must slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles at least 20 feet from the bus.

Red Flashing lights mean that the bus has stopped and is loading or unloading passengers. All drivers must stop their vehicles and wait for the lights to turn off before moving past the bus.

All traffic must stop when the bus is flashing lights on two-lane roads, multi-lane highways, and divided highways.
