Last season, the No. 14 Michigan football team’s longest passing play was a 36-yard throw against then-No. 1 Oregon. While the Wolverines ultimately lost , that pass was a high point in their otherwise bleak aerial game. This year, however, in Michigan’s season opener against New Mexico, freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood immediately surpassed that, rocketing off a 39-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver Channing Goodwin — the longest passing play of the game.

During the offseason, there was some speculation as to who might step into that third wide receiver role behind graduate Donaven McCulley and junior Semaj Morgan. Even though it was still too early to tell, Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore singled out Goodwin as a potential option .
