U.S. News & World Report recently released rankings of the top public high schools in the country. One school in Catawba County was ranked as one of the top 10 high schools in North Carolina.

Discovery High in the Newton-Conover City Schools district was ranked as the sixth best high school in the state out of 682 high schools. It was also ranked 275th nationally out of more than 24,000 high schools.

Discovery had the highest ranking of any school in the Hickory metropolitan area, comprised of Catawba, Alexander, Burke and Caldwell counties.

At Discovery High during the 2022-2023 school year, 100% of students took at least one Advanced Placement (AP) exam and 81% received a passing score, according to the media company’s data. The school had a graduation rate of greater than 95%, a math
