The Powerball jackpot has surged to $1.3 billion following a drawing on Labor Day where no one matched all six winning numbers. The winning numbers drawn on Monday night were 8, 23, 25, 40, 53, and the Powerball was 5.

Despite no jackpot winner, there were 12 tickets that matched all five white balls, earning prizes of $1 million or more. Two of these tickets, sold in Montana and North Carolina, won $2 million each. The remaining ten tickets, which won $1 million each, were purchased in California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The $1.3 billion jackpot is available as an annuity, paid out over 30 years. However, most winners opt for the lump-sum cash option, which is estimated at $589 million. This amount is subject to taxes, including an automatic withholding tax of 24% and an additional 13% in federal taxes when filing for the 2025 tax year. Some states also impose taxes on lottery winnings, ranging from 2.9% to 10.9%. Notably, residents of California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not pay state taxes on their winnings.

The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The jackpot has not been won since May 31, 2025, marking 38 consecutive drawings without a winner. Prior to this drought, the jackpot was won 11 times, but all those winnings were below $600 million.

Wednesday's jackpot is now among the ten largest in U.S. history, including both Powerball and Mega Millions. The record for the largest lottery jackpot in the U.S. remains at $2.04 billion, won by a single Powerball ticket in California on November 7, 2022. The winner, Edwin Castro, publicly claimed the prize in early 2023.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, a factor that contributes to the growing size of the jackpots, which are designed to attract attention and increase ticket sales. Powerball is played in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings take place at 10:59 p.m. ET at the Florida Lottery studio in Tallahassee.
