POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX) - A Tri-State man died while hiking in the Red River Gorge area, according to FOX19 NOW’s sister station, WKYT.

Cameron Smoot, 24, of Mason, was identified by the coroner’s office as the hiker who fell and later died, WKYT reports .

According to Powell County Search & Rescue, emergency crews were called to Whittleton Arch around 4 p.m. Saturday following reports that someone fell approximately 40 feet from the top of the arch onto the rocks below.

Smoot was alert, but critically injured when first responders reached him, WKYT reported , citing officials.

After a challenging carry-out through rugged terrain, Smoot was transported to the Middlefork Fire Department and flown to UK Hospital by helicopter.

He later died from his injuries.
