CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The biggest sign of confidence that the Cincinnati Reds’ front office and coaching staff showed in Sal Stewart wasn’t the fact that the team called the 21-year-old up to the big leagues after he played in just 38 games in Triple-A. It was that manager Terry Francona put Stewart at first base for his big league debut.

In the Minor Leagues, Stewart only played two games at first base. He spent most of his time at third base and at second base. But the Reds’ lineup needed another difference maker, and Stewart had been tearing up the cover off the ball. The Reds called him up on Monday even if there isn’t an obvious place to play him.

“There’s going to have to be some creativity here to make this work,” Francona said. “We’ll do that.”
