Plymouth Argyle begin their Vertu Trophy campaign against Cheltenham Town at Home Park tonight in what is the first of their three games in Southern Section Group B.
It is the first time the Pilgrims have taken part in the competition, which is for all 48 League One and League Two teams as well as invited under-21s teams from Premier League clubs, since the 2022/23 season.
That was when Argyle reached the final of the EFL Trophy, then sponsored by Papa Johns, and lost 4-0 to Bolton Wanderers in front of an 80,000 crowd at Wembley.
The Pilgrims had beaten Cheltenham on penalties in the semi-final at Home Park following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, and the two clubs are facing each other again tonight.
Both have had very disappointing starts to their seasons. Argyle are 21st in League On
