Stan Rick was at the right place at the right time on Monday, Sept. 1.

The Clear Lake man caught the northern lights' brief show over Iowa skies after driving a mile north of Clear Lake to avoid city lights dimming the show.

Rick has traveled around to catch the northern lights, but this spot is his favorite location. He used a northern lights app and a weather app to ensure he didn't visit somewhere with cloud coverage.

"Last night, you could barely see them with the naked eye," Rick told the Register on Sept. 2. "You had to use a phone or camera."

Rick used a Sony A-7R5, suitable for nighttime photography, to capture the show. All of the photos were shot between 9:35 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. Rick sat at the spot for roughly 20 minutes before seeing anything.
