September has arrived with the news that the National Hurricane Center is watching a new tropical storm off the southwest coast of Mexico, and a westward-moving tropical wave far out in the Atlantic Ocean shows increasing chances of becoming a tropical cyclone.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kiko, further west off Mexico's coast, strengthened to Hurricane Kiko in the Pacific.

Tropical storm Lorena forms

The most immediate concern is Tropical Storm Lorena, which has formed about 240 miles west of Manzanillo, Mexico and about 345 miles south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas. At 11 a.m. ET, Lorena had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving northwest at 14 mph.
