WHITESBURG, Ky. (FOX 56) — Prosecutors want the murder trial involving the former Letcher County sheriff to be moved to another county, according to a recent court filing.
On Sept. 19, 2024, shots rang out inside the Letcher County courthouse, killing 54-year-old District Judge Kevin Mullins. Kentucky State Police alleged that the former sheriff, Shawn "Mickey" Stines, is the one who pulled the trigger.
Stines was arrested and charged with the murder of a public official after turning himself in.
"This case is unique in that the scene of the crime happens to be the courthouse in which the Defendant is reporting for pretrial conferences, status hearings, and could potentially be tried in," Commonwealth's Attorney Jackie Steele wrote.
