San Jose was slated to open its first safe sleeping site for unhoused residents on Tuesday, but NBC Bay Area learned the site’s opening was pushed back as the city focused on getting the most vulnerable into motels.

As people begin moving into the site sometime this week, however, a lawsuit over conditions at a similar site in San Diego is raising new concerns about how people here will handle the heat.

Unhoused residents will soon begin moving into the red tents on East Taylor Street, though the city did not give a specific day. The location will accommodate up to 56 people, including eight ADA-accessible tents.

Only adults and couples can stay at the safe sleeping site, the city says. Eligible residents must sign up first, and the city isn’t sure how many are on its list for the site.
