A judge sentenced a Chicago man to 20 years Tuesday after he admitted he killed a woman’s new boyfriend after a confrontation, a defense lawyer said.

DyeQuan Kizer, 30, signed a plea agreement in April for voluntary manslaughter under sudden heat for fatally shooting Darius Sims, 29, of Gary, on June 9, 2023, once in the chest.

Court filings show Sims kicked his girlfriend and her two kids out. Kizer – their father – was on the phone with her and overheard parts of the spat.

The two men then got into a “heated argument” before Kizer went over, got his kids in the car, then went back and ended up shooting Sims in the chest. Prosecutors alleged it was unjustified.
