WACO, Texas (KWTX) - After nearly two years of construction the City of Waco’s new landfill is finally done and less than a month from opening, which is set for October 1st.

The landfill, located along FM 939 between Mount Calm and Axtell, was originally supposed to open in the summer of 2025 .

Kody Petillo, the Solid Waste Director for the City of Waco, says they actually finished construction on time, but chose to delay the opening.

“We had available airspace at the existing landfill and wanted to use as much of that as possible, and so it’s really a positive that we’ve postponed the opening,” Petillo shared.

However, even once it does open he says it will still be a few months until it’s open to the general public.
