The Great British Bake Off airs first contestant exit after disastrous cake

The Great British Bake Off launched into chaos with two bakes so catastrophic they appeared destined for the rubbish - or the ground.

One belonged to 30 year old development scientist Hassan, from South Yorkshire, who became the first contestant to depart the tent after his Swiss Roll collapsed into a gooey mess of sponge, chocolate and caramel.

"I've had a mare," he sighed, surveying the "horrible mess" before him. "I've proper mucked it." Predictably, during judging, Paul Hollywood declared: "It looks like it fell out of a tree."
