Walmart and other discounters stand to benefit from new cuts to SNAP funding as lower-income shoppers try to get the most from their food dollars, a retail expert said.
Major changes to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, took effect on Monday.
As a result, about 22.3 million families will lose some or all of their food-buying benefits, according to the Urban Institute.
New provisions included in the federal tax law known as the One Big Beautiful Bill extend work requirements for more benefit recipients and limit or exclude the eligibility of others.
The law also caps future increases based on inflation.
