SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Tuesday marked the 80th anniversary of the formal end of World War II.

The International Museum of World War II in South Kingstown offers visitors a chance to examine artifacts and learn more about significant events, including the conflict in the Pacific theater.

After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, U.S. servicemembers were activated to fight the Axis power on their soil.

"You're fighting on these small islands, you're fighting an adversary who wouldn't surrender, and if you surrender, you would probably die," said Tim Gray, founder and president of the World War II Foundation. "The two adversaries, Germany and Japan, were totally different in the way they fought the war."
