GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Alachua County School Board is weighing a proposal to let the Gainesville Police Department tap directly into school security cameras.

District officials nationwide are reassessing safety after another school shooting last week in Minneapolis.

The Alachua County Public Schools proposal would give police live access to cameras during an emergency—something GPD officials say could help them act faster and more accurately when minutes matter most.

The plan would link school cameras to the police department’s real-time crime center.

Officials say it would let dispatchers watch a live feed during a crisis and direct officers exactly where they need to go.

They add that it’s a step forward in school safety and a way to use existing resources more effectively.
