WEBSTER PARISH, La. (KSLA) - A new women’s prison is being built on Penal Farm Road in Minden.

This is an upgrade from the current women’s jail located on the 4th floor of the courthouse. Webster Parish officials tell KSLA the jail is very outdated and the building is 70 years old. It has old plumbing and electrical wiring that needs constant maintenance.

Officials say it’s costly to maintain facilities.

“The plumbing is old. The electrical is old. We needed to get this jail out of the courthouse,” said Webster Parish Police Jury President Jim Bonsall.

The new jail will also include a classroom environment to give inmates more educational opportunities.
