EL DORADO, Kan. — The halls of Butler Community College athletics feel different these days. There’s a new rhythm, a new voice echoing down the corridors. For the first time in more than two decades, someone other than Todd Carter is sitting in the athletic director’s chair.
Carter, who retired after 34 years at Butler, including 21 as athletic director, left behind a legacy of stability and growth. His retirement opened the door for a familiar face to take over, as longtime women’s basketball coach Mike Helmer begins the transition from the sidelines to the athletic offices.
Helmer, who has guided the Grizzlies for nearly two decades, will coach one more season before stepping full-time into the AD role. The decision wasn’t part of a carefully laid career plan. Instea
