SPOKANE, Wash. – The U.S. Border Patrol responded to an ordinance that the City of Spokane said would expand protections against warrantless searches by immigration enforcement in designated non-public places.
U.S Customs and Border Protection emphasized that federal law supersedes local ordinances such as “Safe and Welcome in Spokane” regarding immigration enforcement.
“U.S. Border Patrol agents, by law, are not required to obtain a warrant to arrest a subject illegally present in the United States,” the agency stated in a press release.
In 2025, Spokane Sector Border Patrol made several significant arrests involving smugglers and criminal aliens. Their operations are based on intelligence and risk assessments and are conducted with discretion, the release said.
