Donald Trump promised to launch a Supreme Court appeal on Wednesday to defend his use of tariffs , warning that constraining his ability to tax imports would destroy the U.S. – even as those levies have caused economic damage around the world, including in Canada.

The Trump administration has now lost twice in its bid to defend its use of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. Rulings by the U.S. Court of Appeals and Court of International Trade have held that the White House imposition of those tariffs is illegal. The latest decision, on Friday, was stayed until Oct. 14 to allow time for an appeal.
