CHEYENNE – Although around 80% of Cheyenne residents recycle, many people are unaware of what happens to their recyclables once their bin is picked up.

On Thursday, the Wyoming Tribune Eagle did a ride-along with the city Sanitation Division's recycling services to follow the path of the city’s recycling.

When WYCO Recycling, Cheyenne’s only major recycling facility, terminated its recycling contract with the city back in 2019, the city no longer had its own recycling plant. However, the city Sanitation Division's transfer station is still open and fully operational.

So, where does your recycling actually go?

Collecting and dumping

All Cheyenne residents pay a recycling fee of $195 a year, and are given a wheeled push cart to utilize, whether they choose to recycle or not.
