VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Though James King was sentenced just six months ago, the 71-year-old man serving two life sentences for sexual assault and murder was able to plead his case for freedom due to current Virginia law during a parole hearing Tuesday.

The family of the victim, Lexie Walters, is speaking out about the need for parole law changes in the wake of this meeting.

"She didn't let anything keep her down," said Walters' sister, Marie Jones. “She [was] just always lifting people up, always when they were sad, when they were angry, it doesn't matter. She always was able to put a smile on their face.”

Jones remembers her sister as fun, bubbly and the life of the party.
