Bipartisan push made to release Peoria woman from immigration facility

Delegation recently denied press access at Eloy Detention Center

As a Peoria resident and business owner nears deportation, a bipartisan delegation was denied press access to visit her at Eloy Detention Center Aug. 31.

Kelly Yu has now been held at the center for nearly 100 days. Her cause has brought together an unlikely duo.

Republican leader Lisa Everett and progressive activist Brent Peak visited Yu at the detention center, and said although Yu was approved for visitors, detention officials refused entry to a journalist after learning she intended to report on the meeting.

Peak said this denial raises serious concerns about transparency and free speech, preventing independent reporting from inside the facility.
