The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) is streaming a new series, Spirit of Birth, and one of the episodes features Nipissing First Nation.

Rebeka Tabobondung, from Wasauksing First Nation, created the series. It focuses on Indigenous midwifery practices and aims to bring this traditional knowledge to light. As Tabobondung noted, many of the stories told and wisdom shared throughout the series have been obscured over time.

“We were urban Indigenous women, dislocated from our traditional territories, seeking out birth knowledge that had been silenced by colonization,” Tabobondung said. “I’ve witnessed a resurgence of midwives and families actively bringing that cultural wisdom back into their lives – and it’s transformational.”
