Manatee County will sue the state of Florida over restrictions imposed by a law known as Senate Bill 180 , but the County Commission will hand the keys in the case to a third-party attorney filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of at least nine other local governments across the state.

The state law, approved this year, was pitched as a way to protect property owners rebuilding after a hurricane by preventing local governments from imposing building moratoriums or restrictive land development rules that would stymie their recovery. It is modeled after a similar law approved in 2023 that applied specifically to Hurricanes Ian and Nicole.
