Jill Sobule did most of her touring as a solo artist, but when she came to Pittsburgh, the folk-pop artist magically had a band — affectionately named Jill’s Jagoffs.

That story of that band, which will play tribute to the late artist on Friday, began with a pool game with English musician and songwriter Lloyd Cole in a Chicago bar in 1998.

Rod Schwartz, the bassist for 11th Hour and the various tributes to The Clash, The Police, etc., had missed his chance to see the British rocker in Pittsburgh because he was rehearsing to fill in on a Clarks gig. He liked Cole enough to go see him in Chicago at the Double Door.
