AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Texas and the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 15 through 24.
In a recent study done by the Trevor Project, 42% of LGBTQ+ young people in Texas considered suicide in the past year, including 49% of transgender and nonbinary young people. The Trevor Project added that 13% of LGBTQ+ young people in Texas attempted suicide in the past, including 16% of transgender and nonbinary young people.
According to the Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ young people are not inherently prone to higher suicide risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Trevor Project added that they are placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatiz
