BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green’s Derek van der Merwe called Urban Meyer six months ago.

The third-year athletic director asked if Meyer had any candidates in mind to replace football coach Scot Loeffler who had just left BGSU to coach the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks.

“Hang on a second,” Meyer said.

He then called Eddie George , who happened to be driving through Bowling Green, Kentucky – a city located about an hour north of Nashville where George was coaching Tennessee State.

Meyer asked if George would be interested in jumping to the Football Bowl Subdivision level to coach BGSU. George, who won the Heisman Trophy as Ohio State’s running back in 1995, said yes.
