"The Baldwins" are heading to Hollywood now that Hilaria Baldwin has been officially announced as a "Dancing With the Stars" contestant.
The Sept. 3 Season 34 cast reveal means Hilaria, husband Alec Baldwin, and their seven children – stars of the TLC reality series "The Baldwins" – are bound for Los Angeles.
"I'm bringing everybody," Baldwin tells USA TODAY. "We just decided to do something crazy and that we'd all go to LA."
Who's on 'DWTS' Season 34?
Baldwin, 41, will not have "The Baldwins" reality show cameras in tow. Season 2 of the ratings-challenged series hasn't been renewed by TLC.
But a battery of dance-cams will be focused on the newly announced cast that includes Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, former NBA point guard Baron Davis, former child star Corey Feldman, reality TV personality Dylan Efron (brother of actor Zac Efron), Conan O'Brien's onetime sidekick Andy Richter, and "Parent Trap" actress Elaine Hendrix.
The group will join previously announced cast members, including wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, TikTok dance influencer Alix Earle, and two stars of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" – Jen Affleck and Whitney Leavitt.
Hilaria Baldwin's 'mystical' journey to 'DWTS'
Baldwin has been a ballroom dancer since childhood, even competing with New York University’s ballroom team. The longtime yoga devotee fueled speculation about a "DWTS" debut when she began posting next-level "Dance Mom" TikTok routines – often starring her game-but-goofy husband. "Alec is working on his dance moves," Hilaria Baldwin says.
Baldwin insists the innocently posted videos manifested the interest of ABC producers through fans, and the deal was only recently finalized.
"It's a kind of mystical journey that got me here," Baldwin says. "I was just having fun. And I've been part of this ('DWTS') world for only about a week and a half."
Her huband has urged his dancing wife to reach out to "DWTS" for years, she says. But Baldwin thought she might be too ballroom-advanced to join the show that is famous for untrained or beginner star dancers.
"I didn't know if I belonged in this space," she says. "For years I've been saying: 'I've got a lot of experience. Is that a problem?' Apparently it's not."
What are Hilaria Baldwin's 'DWTS' hurdles?
Beyond a strong field of social-media-powered dancers, Baldwin has many obstacles to overcome before hoisting the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy with new her pro partner, Gleb Savchenko. There are gaps in her Latin-heavy dance training. And there's the dance-ending hip injury: Baldwin stopped 16 years ago after suffering a broken hip.
"I closed the door on that part of my life," Baldwin says. "I started focusing on yoga, met Alec, and we started having kids. My body is different now."
Another factor is the need to court "DWTS" voters. The Baldwins have been a public lightning rod with their outspoken political views and social media controversies. Alec Baldwin's involvement in the fatal shooting on the 2021 "Rust" set has taken a heavy toll on the couple and their public image (Alec Baldwin's final involuntary manslaughter case was dismissed last summer).
Baldwin says she won't be thinking of proving her detractors wrong on the show.
"Everybody these days has their critics, whether they're in the spotlight or not. I've learned in my 40s that if you go through life trying to prove things to people, then you're missing the point and you're missing being present."
Baldwin will make the "DWTS" experience a fresh chapter for the whole family after some traumatic years.
"You collect the good and the bad in life along the way," she says. "We're all looking forward."
