Thousands of cinema enthusiasts packed Castle Wynd and the route to Stirling Castle's esplanade 30 years ago today (Wednesday, September 3) eager to spot the stars of Braveheart as it had its debut at the city's Macrobert Arts Centre. ‌

Hollywood A-lister Mel Gibson was in Stirling , sporting a kilt, for the first showing of the epic historical drama. ‌

Leading man Gibson, who portrayed William Wallace , revealed he was "overwhelmed" by the city's reception. ‌

Chatting to the Stirling Observer on the red carpet, Gibson said: "It was vital as far as I was concerned that the film be premiered in Stirling. I had always planned that as it is central to Wallace's success."
