Jennifer Aniston is synonymous with Hollywood glamour. The seemingly ever-present A-lister has graced magazine covers for three decades, her haircut spurring thousands of women to lop off their long locks in the '90s.
So why haven't we seen her on the Met Gala steps? In a new interview with Glamour, Aniston, 56, is shedding some light on why she is a permanent no-show on fashion's biggest night.
In the article, published Sept. 2, Aniston confirmed that she has been invited to the Anna Wintour-helmed event many a time, but that she opts not to attend.
"Yes, I have (been invited), but I don’t go," she told the outlet. "It overwhelms me. It's the getting ready, the putting on the dress."
"I'm a 'jeans and flip-flops and tank top' kind of girl," Aniston, a California native, explained. "I love dressing up too, but for me it's a mental game of … 'Let’s get dressed up, put on a fancy dress, makeup, get your hair all 'purdy' and go sit in a big room with your peers.'
"Everyone's there to celebrate each other and have some fun, but I get nervous," she continued. "I even get a little anxious about public speaking, especially over the years of having your words twisted and taken out of context. So I find myself almost hall-monitoring myself in a weird way."
Since skyrocketing to fame amid her starring role on "Friends," Aniston's dating life has remained the subject of frequent tabloid fodder, reaching a fever pitch in 2005 with her divorce from fellow movie star Brad Pitt.
"In the past, journalism used to be gnarly and they wanted to just get you and find something that they can then run forever," Aniston told Glamour. Now, she explained, many years in the biz have hardened her to online critique.
"Whatever," she told the outlet. "You get to a place in life where none of it really matters at the end of the day."
