NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Ten people have been arrested in connection to a drug and contraband smuggling operation at the Hidalgo County Detention Center in Lordsburg, New Mexico.

Officials say an investigation into the operation began when inmate phone calls were being reviewed in an unrelated case. The calls revealed suspicious conversations involving inmates and a detention center kitchen worker. An investigation revealed a network that was smuggling drugs and other contraband into the detention center. The people involved included inmates and outside accomplices, officials say. Multiple agencies worked together to arrest the involved suspects.
