The July death of Alexis Cardenas, one of more than 10 people to die in Harris County Jail custody this year, was classified as a homicide on Tuesday by the county medical examiner.

Cardenas, 32, died July 8 after he was restrained by several detention officers when he allegedly refused to exit the downtown Houston jail. According to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, the primary cause of Cardenas’ death was "cardiac dysrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) associated with acute toxic effect of methamphetamine, cocaine, chlordiazepoxide, and ethanol during physical and electrical restraint."

While the death was determined to be a homicide, it remains to be seen whether anyone will be criminally charged with murdering Cardenas. He had
