TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- The Humane Society of Tampa Bay will not accept young kittens for the time being due to a contagious feline disease.
On Wednesday, HSTB said the shelter is pausing its intake of kittens under four months of age due to feline panleukopenia, also known as feline distemper.
The American Veterinary Medical Association describes the disease as a "highly contagious, potentially fatal disease of cats caused by the feline panleukopenia virus," with kittens being the most severely affected.
Anyone who finds young kittens is asked to take them to the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center. If they can care for the kittens in the meantime, the humane society is offering supplies.
