NEWPORT, Ky. (WXIX) - The man killed in a scooter crash Tuesday in Newport was a veteran who continued to serve his community after his years in the military, his family says.

Kristopher Gardner, 37, died after his scooter collided with a vehicle around 10 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Monmouth Street and New Linden Road , according to Newport police and the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.

“He was the most selfless person ever,” Gardner’s brother, Mark Lawless, described.

Gardener’s mother, Sheila Shank, echoed that description, saying, “He was somebody who would’ve given you his last dollar in his darkest moments.”

Shank says her son was a veteran.

Gardner, his mother said, did two tours in Afghanistan. One of the tours changed him forever, she said.
