LOWELL, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Those on the campus of UMass Lowell are being told to shelter-in-place while a police investigation is underway.

The university said that UMass Police and Lowell authorities were reported Wednesday afternoon of a report of a male on their South Campus “carrying an object suspected of being a firearm.” The shelter-in-place has been issued while they “attempt to find this individual” and they noted that there was no report of a shooting.

Lowell Public Schools noted that the area near UMass Lowell’s South Campus, between Marginal Street and the humane society, is on lockdown and students involved in two school cross-country teams “are safely sheltering inside their schools”. Buses are also being rerouted around the area, causing some delays for dismissal.
