ATLANTA — Seven former CDC officials shared their fears for public health in light of mass firings and budget cuts by the Trump administration Monday.

"Change happens every administration. We’re used to that," said Dr. Deb Houry who told state lawmakers the first Trump administration had competently handled the the rollout of vaccines during 2020's COVID pandemic.

The second administration has been much different.

"What I was not ready for was to have decisions made not based on data and science," she said.

Houry resigned a few days ago after weeks of tumult at the CDC.

"We’re asking that science go first for the policy development and not starting with an ideology and backing into the science," said Dr. Dan Jernigan, who worked 31 years in public health before he left the CDC last
