The Luzerne County Fair is not the biggest event of its kind in these parts — the Bloomsburg Fair likely earns that title, in fame and attendance if not sheer size. But it’s our fair. It’s an opportunity to enjoy what makes this slice of Americana distinctive — and it’s certainly a big deal to participants.

“Everybody else has cats and dogs. I have my cow,” Anya Atherton from Harding said in a preview story in Wednesday’s paper. The 16-year-old patted the red hair of Ruby’s neck and noted she has been caring for the animal for 10 years. “She’s my pet.”

We heartily encourage you to set aside some time and head out to the Luzerne County Fairgrounds on Route 118 in Lehman Township to see for yourself. The fair opened Wednesday and runs through Sunday. Specifically, hours are 4 p.m. to 11 p.
