From the moment the first flecks of gold were uncovered along Last Chance Gulch, downtown Helena has been a hub for discovery, adventure and community.

This month, that tradition continues when dinosaurs and derby cars collide for a colossal fun-filled weekend.

On Sept. 12-14, the fifth annual Septemberfest returns to downtown Helena. This year the free family event combines three popular Helena festivities — the Gills Point S Soapbox Derby, Sauter Balloon Sculpture Festival and the United Way Family Funfest.

“There’s something for everybody,” said Vanessa Larson, one of the organizers for Septemberfest. “You can hang out and watch the derby cars race down the hill or there’s activities to do around the event space.”

According to Larson, the first soapbox derby event was held in 2021.
