BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide they said happened Wednesday evening, Sept. 3, involving a shooting where an innocent bystander was killed.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman as Aldorthia M. Burrell.

Police were called to the 3200 block of Balsam Avenue SW after reports that someone was shot.

When they arrived, police found Burrell on her front porch suffering a gunshot wound.

She was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but sadly did not survive her injuries.

Police said their preliminary investigation showed she was hit by a stray bullet during the exchange of gunfire during a disagreement. They said Burrell was not the intended target.
