Washington, DC is suing the Trump administration over President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy more than 2,000 National Guard troops in the capital. City leaders argue that the move is unconstitutional, violates federal law, and undermines DC’s ability to govern itself. DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb said the “forced military occupation” of the city tramples on basic freedoms and must come to an end.
The lawsuit comes after a federal judge in California ruled that Trump’s earlier use of National Guard troops and Marines in Los Angeles was unlawful. Critics in other cities have also pushed back.
