The Chicago Cubs have made a quiet addition to their farm system in recent days, signing speedster Billy Hamilton to a minor-league deal.

Hamilton, who has not played in an MLB game since the 2023 season, has been recently playing games for Jalisco in the Mexican League, but on the Cubs’ official transaction log for Aug. 31 , he inked a minor-league deal with the North Siders.

Bleacher Nation’s Brett Taylor had flagged the transaction in a piece Wednesday, and the timing of such a deal could have playoff implications for the Cubs.

MLB rules hold that players must be on a team’s 40-man roster prior to 11 a.m. on September 1 in order to be eligible for postseason play, meaning that late Cubs acquisitions Carlos Santana and Aaron Civale would both be eligible.
