Two people are dead and a sheriff’s deputy is recovering from a shooting in Western Hidalgo County after a homicide investigation erupted into a shootout between the suspect and law enforcement authorities early Saturday morning.

Deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded at around 1:47 a.m. to a call about a man with multiple gunshot wounds lying on a road in the 2400 block of Venecia Drive, just outside of Mission.

The man, identified as Felipe Mancilla, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene despite deputies’ life-saving attempts.

“Preliminary investigation indicates … the motive was drug-related,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
